Natural Disasters and Environmental Issues – Coincidence or Connection?

Published by katieanne at 10:24 am under Current Affairs Edit This

As the dead, injured and damaged statistics emerge from the dust from today’s earthquake in China, one has to wonder where the next natural disaster will strike.  This one, following closely on the heels of Burma’s devastating cyclone has to be one of the worst earthquakes in recent history, not just because of its reported 7.8 magnitude, but also because of its 6 aftershocks that ranged up to 6.0 in magnitude. There are those who could say that this is a natural retribution for the way China has acted on its human rights issues, or the way that Burma has also abused human rights, but what about the dead in America’s Midwest?

The environmental issues facing the world seem to be a far more likely cause.  The natural elements are making their voices heard loudly across the globe and everyone has to start to take notice.  Environmental issues have to stop being a soapbox and pulpit for anyone looking for public acclaim.  As with the criticism voiced by some of those not caught up in Obama’s charisma, the time for rhetoric has passed, and it’s time now for people – governments as well as individuals - to stand up and do what’s necessary to first stop creating more damage to the environment, and then work to fix what damage to the environment can be repaired.
