Rocky Horror Remake Madness
The Time Warp says it all: “It’s astounding. Time is fleeting. Madness takes control!”
With all the sequels, prequels and remakes that are going around, you’d think that it was time for some originality – but nope, the latest in the long list of movies that are deemed goldmines in the remaking is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The original movie starring Tim Curry (and not to mention Susan Sarandon) has become a cult classic over the years with a fan base spanning generations. Whether you love the music, enjoy the idea of the interactive dressing up and joining in, or have fun reliving a movie you loved in an earlier part of your life, the Rocky Horror Show has all of that and a “Time Warp” dance as its crowning glory.
Why then does MTV and Sky Movies think then that they can do better? I don’t think they can. The original movie had something of a “shock value” with the open sexuality taboos it covered. Will the remake, as with most remakes, take what is good and make it into more a caricature by going over the top with the scenes that make the movie magic as they stand?
Original news said that Richard O’Brian who was the mastermind behind the original Rocky Horror Show (wrote the book, music and lyrics) would co-produce, but Mr O’Brian has said that he won’t be involved in any way and only heard about the remake when he was sent copies of press articles. It sounds to me as if MTV and Sky Movies already know that people aren’t going to take to the idea of the remake and tried to give it some credibility by including Richard O’Brian in their creative team. Fortunately Mr O’Brian is obviously aware that fans adore this movie in its original format and there’s nothing (other than money for the movie makers) to be gained by putting out a new version.
When a movie has achieved cult status, and is still being enjoyed in movie theatres around the world after all these years, it’s beyond me why anyone would think it’s time to remake it. There are plenty of bad movies out there. Why not remake one of them? Of course they probably wouldn’t make as much money because even die-hard Rocky Horror fans would watch the remake just to see how bad it is - but surely the movie makers wouldn’t be doing this just for the money …would they? “It’s enough to make insa-aaaaane!”
