Can Mamma Mia Re-sink the Titanic?
With gross sales of over £67million, Mamma Mia is now leading all other movies in the UK - and that includes established “Brit” movies such as the Harry Potter and Bridget Jones series. The only one still to sink is Titanic which finally finished its movie domination at £69million and with Mamma Mia still in UK movie theaters after 16 weeks; it continues to rake in the profits. It’s not just one of those “English” quirky things either, the movie is still showing in other countries around the world too!
Whilst I’m not someone who enjoys “silly movies”, far preferring the likes of Titanic, I have to say that I loved Mamma Mia. I remember the Abba era well and the songs that make up the majority of dialogue in Mamma Mia still feel fresh, although that could be something to do with the hilarious way these are sometimes used.
One of the things that has helped make the gross sales so high is that people are going back to see the movie again, and even again. You see one action scene, you’ve pretty much seen them all. With Mamma Mia there are so many little looks, jokes and innuendo that you go back not only because you come out feeling good, but also to see the things you missed first time because you were too busy laughing at something else or singing along.
With the DVD due for release prior to Christmas, it will be interesting to see if Merryl Streep and Co manage to resink the Titanic in terms of gross profit, but one thing’s for sure, this movie made more than anyone would have believed, and the DVD is certain to be a success as a featured item on many people’s Christmas wish lists this year!
